Richard Kuhn is Professor and Head of the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University (West Lafayette, IN) and Director of the Bindley Bioscience Center in Purdue’s Discovery Park. Dr. Kuhn received his Ph.D. in molecular biology from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook in 1986 and completed his postdoctoral training at the California Institute of Technology. He joined the Department of Biological Sciences at Purdue University in 1991, becoming a Purdue University Faculty Scholar in 2004. He was appointed the position of Director of Bindley Bioscience Center in November 2007. Dr. Kuhn is world renowned for his molecular virology research. His research based at the Markey Center for Structural Biology at Purdue University has focused on the biology of viruses that infect humans such as yellow fever, dengue virus, West Nile virus and hepatitis C. Specifically, Dr. Kuhn studies the replication and assembly of the alphaviruses and the flaviviruses. Together with his structural biology colleagues, he has been involved in many fundamental studies examining the structure and assembly of enveloped viruses, including the first structure of the dengue virus. His research focus continues to be virus replication, virion assembly, and host cell interactions using biochemical, genetic, and structural techniques. Dr. Kuhn is an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, a University Faculty Scholar, and an invited member of the U.S. Panel on Viral Diseases of the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program.
Under Dr. Kuhn’s leadership, the Bindley Bioscience Center will focus around Purdue's strengths in cancer, infectious diseases, and functional and translational genomics. The center will also support future development of technologies in genomics, proteomics and advanced analytical chemistry. |
