The Discovery Learning Research Center has organized an interdisciplinary group of researchers interested in transforming teaching and learning through the development of what has been referred to as digital gaming based learning (DGBL), mobile learning, interactive technology, gaming education and gaming technology. All of these terms refer to the integration of information technology into educational innovations and new learning environments. The "gaming committee" is developing collaborative research projects, a new gaming-based interdisciplinary curriculum, and proposals for external funding. High-end visualization and perceptualization technologies and mobile handheld devices are being developed to enhance learning initiatives.
The DLRC is involved in a number of projects designed to promote learning in a variety of venues
outside the classroom. With support from the Center, faculty and staff have designed museum
exhibits for nanotechnology, and plans are underway for a plant genomics exhibit. We are also
seeking funding for an educational gaming "arcade" exhibit that is designed to motivate middle
school students to explore the STEM disciplines that are essential for video game design.
The mission of the DLRC is to advance research that revolutionizes learning in the STEM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and math).
