Nuclear Energy

Purdue researchers are contributing to research on a breakthrough design for nuclear power plants known as Modular Boiling Water Reactors (MBWR). MBWRs are inherently safe and include built-in, proliferation-resistant characteristics. Futuristic research on acoustic inertial confinement fusion is underway.

We are creating the Center for Materials Under Extreme Environments (CMUXE) to engage in novel key areas:

  • Nuclear Fusion; both magnetic and inertial
  • Advanced Fission Systems
  • Hydrogen Behavior in Reactor Materials
  • Materials under Extreme Conditions for Nano Lithography
  • High Power Targets for Accelerators
  • Low Temperature Plasmas for Astrophysics Applications
  • Directed Energy Lethality for Defense Applications
