Commitment to Athletic Excellence

Intercollegiate Athletic Facility (IAF)

Purdue conducts its home volleyball matches and wrestling meets in the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. The IAF, located between Mackey Arena and the Mollenkopf Athletic Center, was built in 1982 and called the Multi-Purpose Facility its first two years. It has a seating capacity of 1,696.

A shining example of Purdue’s recognition of and commitment to its intercollegiate volleyball program, the IAF provides the Boilermakers with their own practice and playing area. The original match court was the first one in the country to be fully painted and lined for volleyball only, unobstructed by a basketball court.

Over the last several years, the IAF has received numerous improvements. First, new scoreboards were added in 1995. Then in 1997 the main playing surface was moved (now running north and south) and redesigned. Most recently, in 1998, permanent bleachers were installed on the east side of the court and wheelchair seating was incorporated to meet the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The Boilermakers have made the IAF a definite home-court advantage, winning 63.5 percent of their matches in the building (a 169-97 record). Purdue played host to the 1982 and 1983 NCAA Mideast regionals in the IAF and first-round NCAA Tournament matches in 1981 and 1987.

The Purdue wrestling team hosts its home meets in the IAF as well.  The IAF also houses the Jane P. Beering Academic Learning Center, a 3,500-square foot weight room, and the Athletic Ticket Office.

The Student-Athlete Academic Center currently consists of a computer lab and study, research and tutor areas totaling 6,500-square feet.  On September 28, 2007, a $2 million gift from former Boilermaker All-American quarterback Drew Brees and his wife Brittany was announced to enhance the academic area on the second floor of the IAF.  The center will be renamed the Drew and Brittany Brees Student-Athlete Academic Center.  Plans call for the space to increase to 11,000-square feet after offices currently occupied by coaches and administrators are moved into Mackey Arena as part of that facility's makeover, which is scheduled to be completed in 2011.
