Be sure to fill out all fields and have the student-athlete sign in the appropriate space. Some instances do not require a signature, such as "Note taker," "Runner," or if the student-athlete is a "No Show."

  1. Do you need more tutors?

    Applications for tutors are accepted on a rolling basis. However, tutors are assigned student-athletes based on demand. While we may process your application and hire you as a tutor, there is no guarantee for the number of hours you may work.

  2. What are the qualifications to become a tutor?

    Tutors should be Purdue University students or graduates of a four-year university who have received an A or B in a class to be qualified to assist others. Also, tutors should be highly motivated and capable of interacting with student-athletes possessing a wide range of ability, motivation, and backgrounds.

  3. Do you need another drop-in tutor?

    We utilize drop-in tutors in addition to the one-on-one help normally provided to student-athletes. These drop-in positions are limited and arranged each semester. Currently there is no need for additional drop in tutors.

  4. Do you need tutors in the summer?

    Yes, our tutoring services continue during Maymester and summer sessions, but often demand for tutors is less than during the fall and spring semesters. Please contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator if you will be available during the summer months.

  5. Do you have to earn an A or B to tutor a class?

    Yes, we require you to earn an A or B in a class before being qualified to tutor others. The Tutor/Mentor Coordinator can grant exceptions if you did not attend Purdue University.

  6. How much do you pay tutors?

    •  Undergraduate student - $7.50/hour
    •  Completed bachelor's degree - $9.50/hour
    •  Completed master's degree - $11.50/hour
    •  Mentors - $12.00/hour
    •  Note taker - $6.00/hour
    •  Class checker - $3.00 per check
  7. I can't come to the scheduled training session -- when can I be trained?

    If you cannot make it to a group training session, contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator to schedule training during normal business hours, depending on availability.

  8. Can I tutor if I don't have my paperwork completed yet?

    No, all paperwork must be completed (hiring application, academic tutor statement, payroll forms, and ID on file) before you will be assigned student-athletes to tutor.

  9. What forms of ID do I need to become a tutor?

    The most common forms of ID needed include one of the following combinations:

    •  Driver's license AND original social security card
    •  United States passport
    •  Foreign passport AND I-20 visa

    A listing of other forms of acceptable identification is available on page three of this I-9 form (link to i-9.pdf)

  10. Can I use a copy of my social security card?

    No, faxed or photocopies of your social security card are not acceptable. You need to provide your original, signed card for verification.

  11. What if I don't have my social security card here?

    There are other combinations of identification that are acceptable for verification purposes. Please see page three of the following I-9 form for more information (link to i-9.pdf).

  12. I tested out of a class -- can I tutor it?

    In some cases, yes, with Tutor/Mentor Coordinator approval.

  13. I went to school somewhere else - can I tutor classes here?

    In most cases, yes, with Tutor/Mentor Coordinator approval.

  14. What does a runner do?

    Runners, also called class checkers, check class attendance on a limited basis.

    Class checkers, also called runners, check class attendance on a limited basis.

  16. Do I get paid more to tutor a group?

    Yes, tutors earn the base rate for the first student-athlete and each additional student-athlete in a group setting garners an additional $1/hour. Please use brackets on your timecard and indicate "group."

  17. What if I tutor more than one student-athlete at the same time?

    Purdue Athletics highly encourages one-on-one tutoring sessions in order to provide the most direct and helpful attention to each student-athlete. However, group tutoring may occur with the prior approval of the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator. Please use brackets on your timecard and indicate "group."

  18. What if a student-athlete forgot to sign his or her timecard?

    Ask the student-athlete to sign it next time you see him or her, or you can have the Tutor/Mentor initial it for you.

  19. How do I indicate "note taker" on my timecard?

    Write "Note taker" in the student-athlete signature line, and indicate the class on the next box. An example of a timecard can be seen here. (link to Tutor Timecard.jpg)

  20. When are timecards due?

    Timecards are collected every other Wednesday night from the collection box. The next collection date is always posted on the box.

  21. What if I failed to turn in my timecard on time?

    If you miss a pay period, please deposit your timecard in the collection box. Your pay will be included in the following pay period. However, note that timecards more than two pay periods late CANNOT be accepted.

  22. What paperwork should I fill out every time I tutor?

    Each time you meet with a student-athlete you should fill out
    •  Timecard
    •  Tutor session report (be sure to complete a session report for each student-athlete, even when tutoring in a group situation)

  23. Can I get paid retroactively?

    If you turn in a timecard after the deadline, the pay will be distributed to you during the following pay period. However, timecards more than two pay periods late will not be accepted.

  24. Can I tutor on campus?

    No, tutors are not normally allowed to meet with student-athletes on campus. We require all tutor sessions to occur within the Purdue Athletics buildings. In certain cases, the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator may grant exceptions. Please ask.

  25. How long is the computer lab open?

    The computer lab located in IAF 201 is an ITaP computer lab. Availability can be found here ( http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/lab/about.cfm ). Note that the lab is closed holidays and days of home football games.

  26. What hours is the Shively Media Center open?

    The study area is available Monday-Thursday 8:00-10:30 p.m. It is located on the fifth floor.

  27. What hours is the Intercollegiate Athletics Facility (IAF) available?

    Normally the IAF is available the same operating hours as the IAF 201 ITaP computer lab located inside. Check the lab schedule ( http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/lab/about.cfm ) for exact hours, especially on holidays. On days of home football games ( http://purduesports.collegesports.com/sports/m-footbl/sched/pur-m-footbl-sched.html#sked ) the IAF is also closed. The usual hours are

    •  Monday-Thursday 7:00 a.m. - 10:30 p.m.,
    •  Friday 7:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
    •  Saturday
    •  Sunday 12:00 p.m. - 10:30 p.m.

  28. What hours is the Ross Ade Pavilion open?

    The study area is available Monday-Thursday 8:00-10:30 p.m. It is located on the fifth floor.

  29. How many hours a week can I tutor?

    Purdue Athletics highly discourages tutors to spend more than 20 hours/week tutoring student-athletes, as this position is designated part-time. Also, the amount of hours available to each tutor varies weekly and is never guaranteed. Contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator for more information.

  30. Can I tutor on weekends?

    Yes, the IAF is open both Saturdays and Sundays, but it is not open on certain holidays or during home football games.

  31. Can I tutor on holidays?

    The IAF is closed during official Purdue University holidays.

  32. Where do I park?

    •  There is no parking specifically for tutors. The F-Lot located on Northwestern Avenue outside the IAF is free on weekends and after 3:00 p.m. on weekdays. During the day you must have an A, B, or C permit and park in designated spaces. The lot is not available during most sporting events.
    •  The large lot north of Ross Ade Stadium is also available to those with A, B, or C permits.
    •  The City of West Lafayette has free 2-hour parking on the streets located immediately east of the IAF.

  33. Do I get a parking permit?

    Unfortunately, Purdue Athletics cannot extend extra benefits to tutors such as parking permits, tickets, books, etc.

  34. What are the benefits besides the pay?

    Unfortunately, Purdue Athletics cannot extend extra benefits to tutors such as parking permits, tickets, books, etc.

  35. Do I get tickets to athletics events?

    Unfortunately, Purdue Athletics cannot exchange tickets for tutoring services. If you would like to purchase tickets you may do so by contacting the IAF ticket office located on the first floor.

  36. Can I print for free?

    The computer lab located in IAF 201 is regulated by ITaP. You can find printing policies here (http://www.itap.purdue.edu/tlt/printing/).

  37. What if I need to copy a book?

    There is a photocopy machine available in IAF 226. It is free for academically related services such as copying book pages or class notes.

  38. Can I have a copy of a student-athlete's textbook?

    We do not keep extra copies of text on hand. One solution is to photocopy selections using the free copy machine located in IAF 226.

  39. Do I get books for free?

    No, Purdue Athletics cannot provide books to tutors.

  40. What if a student-athlete doesn't show up for a tutoring session?

    First, check to see if the student-athlete tried to contact you via phone or email to cancel the tutoring session. If you have not made contact with him or her, wait for 15 minutes as a courtesy. After that time

    •  Mark "No Show" on your timecard
    •  Check the "No Show" box on a Tutor Session Report
    •  Contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator at icatutor@purdue.edu

  41. What if I cannot make it to a tutoring session?

    Please notify the student-athlete directly if possible. Otherwise you can always notify the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator or the student-athlete's athletics academic advisor.

  42. What if a student-athlete wants me to tutor her in a class that I'm unfamiliar?

    If you do not feel comfortable assisting someone for a specific class, please share this with the student-athlete and the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator. A new match will be found for the student-athlete.

  43. Where do I get my paycheck?

    Paychecks are distributed by Michele Brost in IAF 217 Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and 1:00-5:00 p.m.

  44. What does a student-athlete look like?

    If you are unsure the identity of a student-athlete, contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator for help. Also, team rosters and photos are available at www.purduesports.com for help in recognizing student-athletes.

  45. What if my paycheck is incorrect?

    Paycheck discrepancies are settled with the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator, and all decisions are final. Please notify us immediately if you have a question about your pay so we can correct any problems.

  46. Can I get notes from a class that I am tutoring?

    You are encouraged to work with the student-athlete using her or his notes. Purdue Athletics offers note taking services on a limited basis, but this is for the student-athlete only when missing class due to athletics competition.

  47. There is a new class I can tutor - how do I update that information?

    Contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator to update any class, availability, or contact information.

  48. Can I contact a student-athlete's instructor?

    No, tutors may not contact course instructors directly for any reason. If you have questions about a class or need clarification on in-class instructions, please contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator for assistance.

  49. What if I miss a tutoring appointment?

    If you miss a tutoring appointment, please contact both the student-athlete and Tutor/Mentor Coordinator immediately.

  50. How does "prep time" work?

    Sometimes tutors may need extra time to review a student-athlete's course material or prepare notes. This is understandable; however prep time cannot be compensated unless the tutor contacts the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator or an athletics academic advisor for prior approval.

  51. How much prep time can I put on my timecard?

    Please contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator before claiming any prep time.

  52. Who is the academic advisor for the student-athlete I am tutoring?

    Each student-athlete is assigned an athletics academic advisor who should be used a resource between tutor and student-athlete. Advisors, their sport(s), and contact information can be found here (http://www.purdue.edu/athletics/student_services/pages/misc/contact.html).

  53. I don't like the person I'm tutoring - can I stop tutoring him or her?

    The Tutor/Mentor Coordinator can help you adjust to a student-athlete's learning style and provide you with resources, or if need be, assign you to a different student-athlete.

  54. What if the student-athlete is not prepared for the tutoring session?

    Work with any available notes or resources for the current tutoring session, and note the student-athlete's preparedness on the tutor session report. This will help communicate the student-athlete's situation to the academic advising staff.

  55. Can I check out an athletics laptop?

    Purdue Athletics laptop computers are available only to student-athletes when traveling to/from competition.

  56. Why is the IAF always so full?

    Our academic support services are highly beneficial and popular among Purdue student-athletes. However, due to demand, space can be at a premium during peak hours. Please have patience as we look to expand our space and take advantage of off-peak hours or the Ross Ade Pavilion space for tutoring.

  57. Can I tutor somewhere else besides the IAF?

    No. Meetings between tutors and student-athletes must take place within the athletics buildings such as IAF, Mollenkopf, or the Ross Ade Pavilion. Exceptions may be granted on rare occasions by the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator.

  58. What is an I-20 visa?

    International students wishing to tutor must have appropriate documentation, including an I-20 visa.

  59. Why have no student-athletes contacted me for tutoring help?

    Tutors are assigned based on requests from student-athletes. The most requests come at the beginning of the semester. If all our student-athletes' needs are currently being met, we cannot guarantee the number of hours you will work. Contact the Tutor/Mentor Coordinator to update your contact information.
